ORPHAN CARE

The Need

Currently, there are over 50 children who are placed in foster care in Loudoun County. That number will fluctuate daily, as Child Protective Services (CPS) regularly removes children from unsafe situations of abuse and neglect. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) estimates 153 million children are currently orphaned throughout the world. 153,000,000. To put this in perspective, the populations of California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Georgia totals approximately 153 million.

There are an estimated 2.2 billion Christians in the world today. Given James 1:27, and our adoption as sons of God (Galatians 4:1-7), the statistics in paragraph one should not exist. If just 1 out of every 20 of God’s children would adopt just one child needing a mother and father, this world would we see no more orphans.

Grace Community's Response

James 1:22 commands Christians to not simply hear the word of God, but to actually do what it says. James goes even further in chapter 2 when he calls faith without works, “dead,” and completely unable to save a man. However, between James 1:22 and James 2, the pastor of the Jerusalem church says:

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. "

GCC is looking to become obedient to James 1:27 by working with the Loudoun County foster care system, and American World Adoption Agency, in an effort to combat the distress of the orphan. There are a number of ways in which GCC members can actively participate in the care of orphans, such as foster care, adoption, and respite care. If the Holy Spirit is burdening you to care for those who need parents, please contact us so we can help answer questions, connect you to resources, discuss fears/concerns, and talk about various options which may be best for you given your current stage of life.
